The Project
The research project "SurgicalAIHubGermany" aims to make surgical quality measurable and optimizable through the use of artificial intelligence (AI). By developing a data-driven platform that analyzes surgeries, surgical skills are intended to be evaluated in a scalable way. This is achieved by further developing and testing methods such as machine learning and deep learning in practice.
Background
In Germany, over 15 million surgeries are performed annually, with the risk of postoperative deaths heavily depending on the experience of the surgeons. To address this, the project is developing an interactive AI platform that allows for the objective measurement and improvement of surgical procedure quality. In parallel, a network of university hospitals is being established to implement these technologies in practice and bring them into clinical application.
Current Status
Last month, the international project consortium met in Dresden to discuss the progress of development. The research team from mbits presented the first prototype of the video platform. The development focus is on the ability to upload large amounts of data in the form of endoscopy videos, as well as the creation and implementation of legal regulations for the release of medical imaging data. To this end, there is close collaboration with a law firm specializing in health data exchange.
Outlook
If successfully implemented, a platform will emerge that supports surgeons worldwide in improving the quality of their surgeries. The results are transferable to various medical conditions and surgical techniques and could contribute to better healthcare in the long term.
