Successful demos, strong collaboration, and clear next steps
On January 15 and 16, 2026, the 5th Hackathon of the Surgical AI Hub Germany (SAIHG) took place at Dresden University Hospital. Two intensive days were dedicated to professional exchange, technical advancement, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the project consortium.
Funded by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the project aims to make surgical quality objectively measurable using artificial intelligence and to sustainably improve it. By establishing a data-driven value creation network, surgical expertise is to be systematically analyzed, evaluated, and made available internationally in the long term.
Focus of the hackathon: AI-supported quality analysis
The hackathon focused on the further development of AI-based methods for the automated analysis of quality-relevant events during surgical procedures. The presented results demonstrated how data-driven approaches can help represent surgical quality in a transparent, comparable, and scalable manner.

mRay Video as a component of the overall project
mRay Video represents the contribution developed by mbits within the project team. This component comprises an internationally available web portal for the privacy-compliant collection, review, description, and distribution of video material. In addition, together with the project partners Chimaera (annotation tool) and Formigas (application for presenting surgical quality results), a first integrated overall demonstrator was successfully presented. The interaction of the individual components clearly illustrates how a seamless, practice-oriented workflow can be created from annotation, AI analysis, and visualization.
